Sager, Donald A.
Donald A. Sager, 85, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at the Hiawatha Care Center. Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and after noon Wednesday.
Survivors include his wife, Anna; children, Larry (Jeanna) Sager, Carol (Larry) Klotzbach and Janet Sager, all of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother, William.
Don was born June 17, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, to Edward and Carrie Sager. He married Anna Long there on Sept. 1, 1945. He worked for Century Engineering, retiring after 38 years. Don was an Army veteran of World War II, receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
Don enjoyed working with his hands on numerous types of small engines. He was an avid license plate collector, spending much of his time looking for another plate to fill a certain part of his collection. He also loved to spend a few days a month trying his luck at the casinos.
His love for his children and grandchildren was always present in his gentle ways. He had a caring way for anyone he spoke with and enjoyed talking to the neighborhood children who knew they were always welcome at his doorstep.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or VFW Post 788.
