Dickson, Betty
BETTY DICKSON
Cedar Rapids
Betty Lavine Dickson was born in Burlington,
Iowa, on March 16, 1929, and died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013.
She was the daughter of Velma and Lawrence Lavine.
Betty loved dessert, music, a good soap opera and an occasional Bloody Mary.
Betty grew up in Des Moines and Burlington, Iowa. As a teenager, she chose to live in Burlington, with her beloved great-grandmother. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1947. After graduation, Betty became a telephone operator with Northwestern Bell/Qwest where she worked until her retirement in 1981.
In 1962, Betty and her family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Betty was a devoted single mom to the 3 "Ks," Kathy, Karen and Kimberly.
An accomplished pianist, Betty loved to play piano and sing with her girls. Although money was always tight, music provided a great sense of joy to the family. She loved anything Rogers & Hammerstein, "Moon River," and a good polka. On her many visits to California, Betty loved to visit Lake Tahoe with her daughters and grandchildren.
The family expresses thanks to all of Betty's caregivers at Creekside Care Center where she spent her remaining years.
She is survived by her three daughters, Kathy, Karen and Kimberly; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
