TIFFIN - Lifelong Johnson County resident and Kirkwood Community College finance manager Abbie Weipert has announced her bid for the Iowa House of Representatives District 77 seat.
Weipert, a Democrat, said, as a member of the House, she would prioritize budgeting to increase education funding and expand workforce training to meet economic demands and keep jobs in Iowa.
'As your representative, I will be transparent, inclusive and accountable to our district in order to bring concerns to the capital and work with other legislators to move Iowa forward,” Weipert said in a Sunday news release.
Other priorities would include addressing Medicaid privatization, women's health care options, advocating for the elderly and disabled and addressing environment and water quality issues, according to the release.
Former Tiffin Mayor Royce Phillips and North Liberty Mayor Amy Neilsen also have announced candidacy for the House seat.
Earlier this year, current Representative Sally Stutsman, D-Riverside, said she would not be running for a third term in the House.
District 77 is a largely rural district that covers most of Johnson County west of Interstate 380, the portion of the county south of Iowa City. The district also covers several growing communities including North Liberty, Tiffin, Oxford, Swisher and Shueyville.
Candidates will first seek party nominations in the June 7 primary before the November election.
