Coal bunker fire in Cedar Rapids
Jun. 8, 2011 6:30 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS – Cedar Rapids firefighters have been called to the Prairie Creek power generating station on C Street SW around 4:30pm.
The first report from the Alliant Energy facility is that one of the coal bunkers is smoldering.
The bunkers are like coal silos that are 22 wide by 80 feet high. They feed into a boiler that helps the station generate electricity. There are several of them on the site.
Firefighters will need to use foam to smother the smoldering coals. Firefighters were called to the facility on May 19th for a similar problem.
