Quick thoughts on Jarrod Uthoff choosing Wisconsin
Mike Hlas Jul. 19, 2010 9:13 pm
1. First of all, we have no idea how recruits respond to college coaches. But there is no
question Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan and his staff (including longtime former Iowa assistant Gary Close) connect to high school players.
2. Uthoff, by all accounts, is a decent, hard-working, intelligent young man.
3. Former Linn-Mar prep Jason Bohannon did very well for himself by signing on with Ryan and Wisconsin. So have a lot of players in the last decade. Wisconsin has gone to nine NCAA tournaments and has nine winning records in Big Ten play in nine years under Ryan.
4. You can't get everybody in the recruiting game, whether you're Iowa, Duke or New Hampshire. Not getting Uthoff doesn't mean Fran McCaffery and his new staff aren't on the right track.
5. Iowa has rebuilding to do and everybody knows it. Rebuilding always means heavy lifting. I know of no quick fix.
6. I look forward to watching Uthoff, Josh Oglesby and Wes Washpun of Cedar Rapids Washington, Marcus Paige, Josh Montague and Northern Iowa recruit Matt Bohannon of Linn-Mar this winter. Cedar Rapids-Marion is loaded right now, basketball-wise.
