Dubuque pawn shop shooting victim arrested on assault warrant

The man who was shot at a Dubuque pawnshop last week has been arrested on an outstanding assault warrant.
Dubuque police said Geromey J. Gilliand, 20, of Chicago, turned himself in Sunday evening and was arrested at 9:07 p.m. The warrant stems from an assault reported to police Jan. 9, which police say “precipitated” the shooting Jan. 11 at Dubuque Pawn, 2175 Central Ave.
The warrant did not result from the pawnshop incident, police said.
Investigators said they had several contacts with Gilliand and his family since he was released from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after the shooting and convinced him to return to Dubuque to speak with investigators.
Gilliand appeared in court Monday morning and is being held on a $3,000 cash bond. He also has been ordered to have no contact with the others involved in the shooting case.
The investigation into the shooting is continuing, police said.
Gilliand was shot in his lower torso at 3:20 p.m. last Monday. He was hospitalized and then released before police could arrest him on the outstanding warrant.
Police haven't identified who shot Gilliand, but Assistant Police Chief Terry Tobin said the shooter was not the pawnshop owner “but someone otherwise associated with the pawnshop.”
The shooting grew out of a dispute between Gilliand and someone at the shop. He and three others went to the shop and became involved in a physical confrontation that ended with the shooting.
The weapon has been recovered, and the shooter is cooperating with police, according to Tobin.
Police secure the scene in front of Dubuque Pawn, at 2160 Central Ave. Monday, January 11, 2010, after a report of shots fired. (Dave Kettering/Telegraph-Herald)
