Dorthey I. Smith, 91, of Colfax, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at Park Centre in Newton. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at First Baptist Church in Colfax, with burial following at Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church.
The daughter of William L. and Ora (Kennedy) Kidder, Dorthey was born Oct. 19, 1920, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Dorthey was united in marriage to Roy Shakespeare in 1942; following his death in 1952, she married Ray Smith on Nov. 7, 1959.
Dorthey moved to Colfax in 1959 and beside her husband, Ray, she became active in First Baptist Church. In 2010, Dorthey was honored as a 50-year member of the church. During those 50 years she taught the second grade Sunday school class for 41 years. She held offices of church clerk, historian, along with president and secretary of the Ladies Mission Circle. She served on the missionary committee and organized the missionary closet. Dorthey was in charge of the Nursery and the Cradle Roll. She sang in the choir, taught Bible School, hosted guest speakers and scheduled the Meals on Wheels deliveries. Dorthey cut and sorted fabric for the Busy Bees Quilters until her move to Newton. Following her move, Dorthey continued to be faithful in her church attendance through the help of many of the church family.
Dorthey was also a volunteer at the Colfax Senior Citizens Center and was a charter member of the Jasper County Historical Society. In September 2010, Dorthey moved to Park Centre in Newton.
Those left to honor her memory are her sisters, Doris (Dannie) McCain, Mary Daugherty and Shirley Tatro, all of Cedar Rapids; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Larry, Christine, Eva, Elissa and Ethan Opfer of Colfax.
Preceding her in death were her parents; both husbands; a brother, William Kidder; two sisters, Darlene Bailey and Viola Holiday; a half sister, Vivian De Mott; and half brother, Walter Kidder.
Memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church or the Colfax Volunteer Fire Department.
