DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - State officials have issued a safety alert about synthetic drugs that mimic pot, cocaine and other illegal drugs after several Iowa teens ended up in the emergency room.
The Governor's Office of Drug Control Policy is urging parents to talk with their children about the potential dangers of using synthetic drugs labeled as "incense" or "potpourri." Acting Director Dale Woolery says new products may be just as harmful as the outlawed K2 and other synthetic drugs.
The alert was issued on Thursday from the emergency room of a Des Moines hospital, where several teenagers were being treated after using synthetic drugs.
Woolery says parents need to talk to their children because it's not worth the risk.
