No change at the top
Jeff Linder Sep. 29, 2014 4:09 pm
Status quo reigns in the Gazette/KCRG/KGYM high school football poll.
The rankings were released Monday afternoon, and this week's poll looks a lot like last week's poll, particularly at the top.
With one minor exception, the order of the top five teams is the same in each class.
Bettendorf (Class 4A), Pella (3A), Clear Lake (2A), Fort Dodge St. Edmond (1A), Maquoketa Valley (A) and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton (8-Man) remain the No. 1 teams.
The only change among any of the top 10s comes in Class 1A, where West Branch leapfrogs Ogden and moves into the No. 4 spot.
Bettendorf gained a first-place vote this week (taking six of seven) and leads No. 2 Cedar Rapids Washington by a 69-64 margin for the top spot among the big classes. Both teams are 5-0.
Then it's central Iowa powers West Des Moines Dowling, West Des Moines Valley and Waukee, all 4-1 and all of which have taken turns beating each other.
Pella (5-0) leads the 3A field for the fifth straight week, with Cedar Rapids Xavier (4-1) and West Delaware (5-0) running second and third.
Spirit Lake is No. 2 behind Clear Lake in 2A. The Indians host No. 4 Sioux Center in a pair of unbeatens and the biggest game in the state this week.
There are two games pitting 8-Man unbeatens Friday, both of which involve Gazette area teams. No. 4 HLV faces second-ranked, defending state champion Don Bosco at Gilbertville while No. 9 Turkey Valley is at No. 7 Elkader Central.
