LearningRx, Cedar Rapids Public Library partner for reading awareness events

March is a month of reading! Saturday, March 2, 2013 is Read Across America Day and Wednesday, March 6th is World Read Aloud Day and local brain training center LearningRx in Cedar Rapids, located at 5815 Council Street NE, Suite C, is hoping to raise awareness about Dyslexia (“trouble with words”) by offering discounted cognitive skills assessments to students. The week of March 11 – 17 also marks Brain Awareness Week.

Throughout the month of March, LearningRx in Cedar Rapids is offering anyone under 21 a discounted cognitive skills assessment if they bring in a new book for the center's donation box. The assessment measures brain skills like processing speed, attention, logic and reasoning, visual and auditory processing and the three types of memory. The results can help students decide what steps to take in strengthening certain cognitive skills.

At the end of March, the collected books will be donated to the Cedar Rapids Public Library.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Cedar Rapids Public Library for these events in March,” says LearningRx Cedar Rapids Center Director Courtney Axline. “Reading is such an important factor in school and life success. Cognitive skills training attacks the root causes of reading struggles by strengthening weak cognitive skills. An estimated 88 percent of struggling readers are deficient in phonemic awareness, the most important skill needed for good reading and spelling. Our brain training programs strengthen phonemic awareness and actually change the brain to help it process information faster and more efficiently.”
