A Coralville man was charged with tampering with records and other charges related to allegations that he used false records to try to get an Iowa driver's license.
Frank E. Polk, 58, of 1109 12th Ave., Coralville, was charged with tampering with records, an aggravated misdemeanor; possession of a fictitious license, unlawful use of a certificate, and false application for license or ID. The last three charges are serious misdemeanors.
University Heights police pulled Polk over June 3 at Highway 1 and Sunset Street because he was driving a van registered to someone whose license was revoked for drunken driving, criminal complaints state. Records do not say whether the van was registered to Polk.
Polk gave the officer an Indiana driver's license with the name Billy Joe Vanburen. The officer checked the license and found out it was fraudulently issued and Polk admitted not being Vanburen, police reported.
On Wednesday, Polk used a birth certificate, voter ID card, and Social Security card, all under the name Billy Joe Vanburen, to try to get an Iowa driver's license, police reported. Police found the birth certificate and voter ID card during a search at 913 Harlocke St.
Polk told police he got the false documents so he could try to get a driver's license because he could not get one under his own name, records say.
Police did not report whether the birth certificate, voter's ID and Social Security card were real documents issued to a person named Billy Joe Vanburen or if they were fakes.
