Lewis L. Howard, 93, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Fort Madison, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at his residence. A memorial funeral service for Mr. Howard will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 202 E. Washington St., Mount Pleasant, at a time and date to be announced later. Pastor Shirley Spray of Community of Christ Church of Mount Pleasant will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Fort Madison. There will be no visitation at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mount Pleasant, which is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the family for a charity to be chosen at a later date.

Lewis was born May 26, 1921, in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Rhoda (Speer) Howard. He graduated from Shenandoah High School. He was conferred with a Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy from Iowa State University. On Jan. 5, 1947, Lewis was united in marriage to Shirley Iona Sanford, who preceded him in death.
Following his education, Lewis pursued his love of aviation. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a liaison pilot for the 34th Division Field Artillery during World War II. Following the com-pletion of his military service, he continued to pursue flying as a career.
He brought aviation to Fort Madison, where he founded the Fort Madison Flying Service. He built an airfield there that is still in service today. Throughout the years, he also worked in farm management, farm loans and the insurance in-dustry.
Lewis was an active member of the Community of Christ Church, where he served in a number of capacities. He was instrumental in the purchase and development of the church campgrounds near Mechanicsville.
Those thankful for sharing in Lewis' life include his daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Dale Marzolf of Mount Pleasant; a granddaughter and her husband, Kate and Brandon Ridinger of Mount Pleasant, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Elbert Tripp of West Point; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents, wife, four sisters and a sister-in-law preceded Lewis in death.
