Black, Donald C.
Donald C. Black, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Surviving are his sons, Gary L. Black and wife Deborah of Sapulpa, Okla., and Randy L. Black and wife Paula of Marion; brother, Robert Black and wife Vel of California; grandchildren, Kelsey, Adam and Matt; and friend, Debbie Dee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Doris.
Donald Clarence Black was born Jan. 12, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Jay L. and Ruth F. (Skinner) Black. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Wilson High School, where he played football and basketball. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during World War II. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was united in marriage to Doris A. Richardson on June 6, 1954, in Ryan. She preceded him in death on May 1, 1994. He was employed as a serviceman for Iowa and Illinois Gas and Electric from 1951 to 1989.
He was a member of Mount Hermon Masonic Lodge No. 263 A.F. & A.M. for over 40 years. He will be remembered for being generous to many organizations and his love of visiting with others. He enjoyed trains, the Iowa Hawkeyes, talking shop, was a constant tinkerer and above all enjoyed time with his family and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
