Katschkowsky, Elizabeth Ann 'Liz' Rugland
Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Rugland Katschkowsky, 84, of Elkader, died Monday, June 17, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Liz was born Oct. 22, 1928, at the family home in rural Wagner Township, Clayton County, Iowa, to John Oliver and Louisa Alma (Walter) Rugland. She was baptized Nov. 25, 1928, at Norway Lutheran Church, by the Rev. T.W. Tysdal and confirmed there on July 12, 1942, by Dr. S.J. Strandjord.
Liz attended school through 8th grade at Wagner No. 3, then transferred to and graduated from Elkader High School; attended Elkader Junior College for one year, and then attended some summer classes and Luther College in Decorah for one year, where she received her two-year degree in elementary education. Over the years, she taught at rural schools in the area, three years at Manchester Elementary, served as bookkeeper at Dean's Super Valu in Elkader and was a teacher associate at Central in Elkader.
She was united in marriage to Herbert Carroll Katschkowsky on May 29, 1955, at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf, by Dr. S.J. Strandjord. Three children were born to this union.
Survivors include her children, Alan Lee (Robin) Katschkowsky of St. Olaf, Ann Louise (Tom) Tippins of West Des Moines and John William (Alison) Katschkowsky of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Sarah and Brian Cahill and Abby Katschkowsky; brother- and sister-in-law, Richard (Judy) Katchkowsky of Northbrook, Ill.; and sister-in-law, Billie Rugland of West Union.
Liz was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Ervin (Mae) Rugland and Walter Rugland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church or the Elkader Public Library.
Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial Services: 2 p.m. Friday, June 21, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m.Thursday at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader and after 1 p.m. Friday at the church. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
