An Iowa City woman was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft Wednesday after authorities say she used an ATM in March to deposit money into a new bank account from a closed account that did not have a balance.
Jessica E. Maclin, 24, of 1958 Broadway St., is accused of opening a US Bank account in February and depositing money into that account from a closed account by using an ATM in March.
Reports indicate that check deposits were made into the new bank account from the closed account. The money was then immediately withdrawn, leaving a negative balance.
During one of the transactions, Maclin was allegedly caught on bank security footage making a withdrawal of $2,100, Iowa City Police reports indicate.
Maclin allegedly admitted to participating in the transactions, but implied that her boyfriend was also involved.
The US Bank loss from the transactions is listed at $3,133.25, police said.
Maclin was being held at the Johnson County Jail on Thursday morning. She is expected to be released on her own recognizance later Thursday.
Second-degree theft is a class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a maximum $7,500 fine.
