Iowa fifth in latest InterMat rankings

Jan. 24, 2012 12:12 pm
The University of Iowa wrestling team ranks fifth in the InterMat tournament team rankings released today, following a weekend it was swept by Ohio State and top-ranked Penn State. The Nittany Lions are No. 1, followed by Oklahoma State, Minnesota and Cornell.
The Hawkeyes have six ranked wrestlers - all in the top 10 of their respective weights. Matt McDonough leads the way as the second ranked 125-pounder, behind only Minnesota's Zach Sanders. The two are expected to wrestle Sunday when Minnesota travels to Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a Big Ten Conference dual, starting at 3 p.m.
Losses against Ohio State opponents dropped Tony Ramos (133) and Montell Marion (141). Ramos was second but fell to fourth, while Marion was second and dropped to seventh.
Red-shirt freshman Mike Evans is ranked eighth at 165, Ethen Lofthouse (174) is ninth and red-shirt freshman Bobby Telford, who didn't wrestle this weekend and has lost four straight, is 10th at heavyweight. Derek St. John had been ranked second, but is not in the current rankings. He suffered a loss to Ohio State on Friday, aggravating a knee injury that kept him from competition for more than month.
Iowa State is 14th in the team rankings. Andrew Sorenson is the highest ranked Cyclone, sitting in fourth at 165. Chris Spangler (174) is also in the top-10 and ranked sixth. Ryak Finch is ranked 11th at 125, Luke Goettl is 14th at 141, Boaz Beard is 16th at 184 and heavyweight Matt Gibson is 14th.
Northern Iowa is 32nd with two ranked wrestlers. Ryan Loder is sixth at 184 and Joe Colon is 12th at 133.
