JEANNE WEINER
Iowa City
Jeanne L. Weiner, 91, a longtime Iowa City area resident, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, in Kirkland, Wash.
Born July 25, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Rebecca and Louis Rosenberg, she met and married Eugene "Gene" Weiner in Santa Monica, Calif. They moved to Iowa City in 1951, where both were employed at the Veterans Administration Hospital until retirement. Gene died in 2003.
Jeanne, a life-long lover and patron of the arts, was one of the "founding mothers" of the Iowa City Community Theater, with the late, Mary Beth Schuppert, and others. She and Gene worked many productions together, with Jeanne working as stage manager or assistant director, Gene doing the lighting, and daughter Janice climbing around on the risers. Two of her favorites were "The Fantasticks" and ICCT's original production of "Fiddler on the Roof."
Jeanne was an early member of the Iowa City Arts Council. Jeanne, together with Gene, was also active in NARFE, the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees. They traveled widely, exploring the United States coast to coast, as well as Europe, and eventually moved to Kirkland, Wash., for their retirement years.
Jeanne is survived by her daughter, Janice; and granddaughters, Naomi and Lia of Alexandria, Va.; niece, Anne Dykes; grandnephew, Tom; and grandniece, Becky of Skokie, Ill.; and nephew, Ben Wilson; grandniece, Hannah; and grandnephew, Logan of Menlo Park, Calif.
The family will plan a memorial in the coming months and asks that any donations be made to the Nature Conservancy or an arts organization of your choice.
