Monaghan, Donald L.
Donald L. Monaghan, died peacefully at 11:08 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at the Good Neighbor Home with his entire family at his side. He had been courageously battling cancer for several years. He was 75 years of age. Mass of Resurrection: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manchester, with the Rev. John Flaherty as celebrant. Interment: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home and Crematory, Manchester, with a 3:30 p.m. rosary, and after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Donald L. Monaghan was born March 16, 1934, in Monti, Iowa, to Raymond and Lillian (Machart) Monaghan. Donald attended and graduated from Manchester High School in 1953. On May 4, 1957, Donald was united in marriage to Shirley (German) Monaghan. Together they farmed and ran Monaghan Electric, Inc. for many years.
Donald was deeply devoted to his family, friends and his electrical customers. Those who knew Donald best will remember his easy going and friendly personality, as well as his willingness to help out a neighbor. He will be deeply missed.
Donald was very involved in the community, including the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's and the Delaware County Fair Board. He donated countless hours to St. Mary's Church and School, the Fair, the Recreation Center, and the city of Manchester. He was recognized in 2004 as the Chamber Person of the Year.
Donald was a faithful attendee of his children's and grandchildren's many activities and he enjoyed traveling with his family and friends.
Donald is survived by his loving family, including his children, Carrie (John) Pallat of Princeton, N.J., Cathy Monaghan of Chesterfield, Mo., Allen (Keila) Monaghan of Manchester, Art (Emily) Monaghan of Northfield, Min., and Angie Monaghan (fiance Eric Vigen) of McGregor; eight grandchildren; and two siblings, Marjorie (Bill Wolter) Monaghan Wolter and Bernard (Margaret) Monaghan, both of Manchester.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; four children, Anne and Lee in infancy and David and Dan; and his parents, Raymond and Lillian Monaghan.
