Former University of Iowa football player Cedric Everson will go to trial as previously scheduled on Jan. 10, 2011 in Johnson County.
Everson is facing a charge of second-degree sexual abuse after his alleged involvement in the sexual assault of a former UI student-athlete on Oct. 13, 2007.
Everson appeared, via telephone, in a pretrial conference at the Johnson County Courthouse Thursday morning. There was not any new information brought to the conference, though Everson's attorney Leon Spies said his only concern for the length of the trial will be with jury selection.
Spies said the relatively high-profile case and heavy media interest could make the jury selection process difficult. He suggested potential jurors be given a short questionnaire before jury orientation to help with the filtering process.
Aside from jury selection, Spies and Assistant Johnson County Attorney Anne Lahey believe the trial will run smoothly, and said they expect the trial to last four or five days.
Sixth Judicial District Judge Paul Miller brought up Lahey's witness list at the conference, which included 30 potential witnesses, asking if she expected all of them to be questioned. Lahey told Miller there will be a significant number of witnesses, but did not anticipate all 30 would be questioned. She added the alleged victim is expected to take the stand.
Everson and former teammate Abe Satterfield were accused of assaulting the woman in a dormitory room at Hillcrest Residence Hall. Both men were charged in May 2008 with second-degree sexual abuse, and Satterfield was also charged with third-degree sexual abuse.
Their cases had been continued multiple times since, but Satterfield entered a written plea in April to assault with intent to inflict serious injury, a serious misdemeanor, and agreed to testify against Everson.
Satterfield is scheduled to be sentenced in Johnson County at 11 a.m. Jan. 21, 2011. He faces up to a year in prison and a $1,500 fine.
