Linn County supervisors approved two more art works today for county buildings under construction.
The supervisors voted to hire Robert Barnum of Mecosta, Mich., to deliver a mural for the interior of the Jean Oxley Public Service Center on First Street SW. The triptych depicts the county's early settlement, the June 2008 flood, and the area's post-flood recovery.
Under a policy adopted last fall, supervisors set aside 1 percent of each project's cost for art. The budget for Barnum's piece is $14,000.
Konstantin Dimopoulos of Melbourne, Australia, will produce a sculpture for the building's exterior. The piece, designed to evoke local prairie grasses, will cost $93,500.
Supervisors approved a design by Michele Gutlove of Natick, Mass., last week for an overhead installation in the lobby of the new juvenile justice center. That piece's budget is $49,250.
Chicago artist Sonata Kazimieratiene's ceramic relief map was chosen earlier this month for the interior of the Community Services Building in southwest Cedar Rapids, where four limestone pillars will be installed in the courtyard. The pillars are by Susan Falkman of Milwaukee.
Contracts with the artists selected today are subject to legal review and will include all installation costs.
The final works may change slightly from the concept drawings posted below.
