Appreciate native prairie plants
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Aug. 25, 2013 12:29 pm
In a world where environmental disasters make headlines, we need to applaud the efforts of the secondary roads departments around the state for improving our roadsides with native prairie plants.
There are many miles of native prairie grasses and flowers along county highways as well as the interstates. The yellow coneflowers and sunflowers of August will turn into the purple asters of September and then the copper-colored prairie grasses of October. As you drive around Iowa this fall, take time to appreciate your prairie heritage and we can thank the roads departments for doing such a marvelous job restoring our prairie plants.
