Four red light cameras are rolling in Cedar Rapids, and more will be live in the next few weeks.
If the cameras catch you, you'll get a citation in the mail like the one below. It will include a link and a password, so that you can go online and view video footage. On that site, you can pay the $100 fine or appeal the citation.
When the project is fully installed, eight intersections will be monitored by the cameras. Four are live already, at First Avenue East and 10th Street and along Second Avenue, at 10th Street SE, Third Street SW and Sixth Street SW.
In the first week of operation, from March 14-20, about 13 tickets a day were issued due to confirmed violations at the monitored intersections, police said.
Red light cameras caught the violation below on March 23 at the intersection of First Avenue East and 10th Street. The view is looking southwest toward downtown. Police deemed this a violation because the driver did not stop, or at least slow down to a point where he could stop, before making the turn.
