PEORIA, Ill. - The second half isn't going much better than the first half did for the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
The Kernels were limited to six hits and a run Wednesday night in a 2-1 loss to Peoria in Midwest League baseball. Cedar Rapids is 1-5 in the second half and has a road game remaining at Peoria before finally beginning a home series Friday against Clinton.
Starting pitcher Kohl Stewart gave up six hits and two runs over five innings to take the tough-luck loss. Despite a fine 2.53 earned run average, the 2013 first-round draft pick has just a 1-4 record.
The Kernels began the scoring in the third, with J.D. Williams doubling and scoring a Ryan Walker out. Peoria got that run back in the bottom of the third inning and scored another in the fourth to go ahead for good.
Arturo Reyes threw six strong innings for the pitching win for Peoria. Three relievers finished up, including Chris Perry, who recorded the final two outs for the save.
