Like driving, require a test for gun permit

I agree with the Nov. 6 Gazette gun law editorial. No elected sheriff should be allowed to refuse any qualified Iowans the right to carry a concealed weapon. Nor should any law enforcement person be able to prevent a qualified driver the right to operate a motor vehicle.
That said, motor vehicles operators are required to pass a test after proper training in order to display their ability to drive.
For the safety of all, to gain your gun permit, one should have to understand the weapon of choice, along with a short target session, and pass a simple written test before the permit is issued.
With the previous law, some sheriffs were accused of playing politics with permits. Just imagine what they might be accused of if an accidental shooting would occur by an uneducated permit holder.
