A house fire in Tama early Friday took the lives of Diane and George Davis, authorities said.
Crews responded to 1001 McClellan St. around 2 a.m., according to Tama Police Chief Dan Wilkens. Investigators were still at the scene around 10 a.m.
“She would do anything for anybody. She would take you in if you needed a place to stay, and she loved kids,” said Hainline, “George was a hard worker too, working on a diary farm. He would just do anything for anybody," said Jim Hainline, Diane Davis' brother.
One neighbor said the fire started quickly and spread rapidly.
“I saw an orange glow in the window, and I leaned out towards the window, and I saw flames shooting out their bay windows,” said Kim Carter.
Carter said when she tried to call 911 her phone didn't work because the fire had burnt the phone line.
“It spread that fast,” she said.
Family and Friends gathered outside of the home Friday morning to remember the couple. They shared memories of family gatherings.
“She would just cook up anything and everything. She knew what we loved and she cooked it and she would invite anybody that wanted to come along to dinner,” Hainline said.
Hainline said the Davis' have lived in the house since 1992. He said they were married years before that.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Police Department said they will release more information on Monday.
