The Hlist: Mike Gundy and Bo Pelini have had better weekends

1. Big Ten Blues: "We didn't execute well, we didn't tackle well - we didn't do anything well defensively." -- Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini after his team's 36-30 loss at UCLA.

The Cornhuskers gave up 653 yards to the Bruins, including 211 to UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin.

"I'm very angry." -- Wisconsin tailback Montee Ball, who had 61 yards on 15 carries and no touchdowns in the Badgers' 10-7 loss at Oregon State.

Ball has one TD in two games after scoring an NCAA-record 39 last season. His Heisman Trophy candidacy may soon be suspended.

"We pretty much beat ourselves, with poor discipline, with our eyes and especially tackling."  " Illinois defensive end Michael Buchanan said.

The Illini surrendered 510 yards to Arizona State in their 45-14 loss at ASU.

That's three Big Ten teams going out West, and all three coming home humbled.

2. Indefensible: Last season, Oklahoma State was ousted from the national-title hunt in November with its triple-overtime loss at Iowa State.

This year, the dream died in Arizona, with the Cowboys losing to Rich Rodriguez's Wildcats, 59-38.

Oklahoma State was penalized 15 times for a school-record 167 yards.

"If I had saw it coming," Cowboys Coach Mike Gundy said, "I wouldn't have gotten on the plane."

Gundy should have said "seen," not "saw." So that's 15 more yards, for roughing the grammar.

3. Voter Fraud: Last year, Iowa defeated Louisiana Monroe, 45-17.

In hindsight, that was a much-better victory than it was regarded at the time. Because ULM, which won at Alabama in 2007, knocked off Arkansas in overtime Saturday, 34-31.

ULM got votes good for 23 points in Associated Press' Top 25 poll Sunday. Arkansas, which fell from No. 6 in the poll all the way out of the rankings, still had 79 points in the poll though it LOST in Arkansas to the Warhawks.

I vote in the poll, and didn't put either on my ballot. But if ULM wins at Auburn this Saturday, somebody's getting thrown off that ballot to make room for the Warhawks.

The goofy USA TODAY coaches' poll has Arkansas ranked 21st with 246 points. ULM got one single vote from the coaches, at 25th, for one point.

The coaches' poll, as you surely know, is a farce.

4. Here's how to earn a college scholarship: Kick a last-second, game-winning field goal.

That's what (former) walk-on Edgar Castaneda did, making a 30-yarder to give FCS Sacramento State a 30-28 win over the Pac-12's Colorado.

After the game, Sacramento State Coach Marshall Sperbeck awarded a schollie to Castaneda.

5. All-Name Team: Northern Iowa, which plays at Iowa Saturday, is a wordy club.

Quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgan threw three touchdown passes for the second-straight game, this time in a 59-0 win over Central State. Running back Austin Ebertowski rushed for three TDs.

So the two combined for six scores, 11 syllables and 12 vowels on Saturday.

Oh, Zach Cutcomp returned an interception for a touchdown. Sawyer Kollmorgan, Austin Ebertowski and Zach Cutcomp. They're lettermen, all right.
