Oswalt, Fred Derby
Fred Derby Oswalt, 79, died Thursday, May 12, 2011, at his home in High Amana. Funeral services, with military honors: 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 16, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, with the Rev. Dr. Leonard B. Ranson officiating. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery, Richland. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife, Violet; three children, Darla Biwer of Cedar Rapids, Dennis Oswalt of Bozeman, Mont., and David Oswalt of High Amana; four grandchildren, Lindsey Oswalt (Justin), Kayla, Breanna and Cheyenne Oswalt; and a sister, Cheryl George of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Kathryn Prevett Cronbaugh; and a son-in-law, John Biwer.
Fred Derby Oswalt was born Jan. 22, 1932, in Richland, Iowa, the son of Virgil Edward and Fleeta G. (Derby) Oswalt. He graduated from Richland High School in 1949 and served in the U.S. Navy for 5 years, stationed at Norfolk, Va. Fred married Violet Cynthia Marie Prevett on Dec. 27, 1955, in Peace Valley, Mo. He was employed for 37 years at Amana Refrigeration.
In his free time, Fred enjoyed fishing, deer hunting and spending time at his cabin on the river.
