Anthony, Fred A.

Fred A. Anthony, 78, of Robins, died Friday morning, Nov. 5, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West, 1604 J St. SW, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Mark Urlaub of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Vinton. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.

Fred is survived by his wife of 58 years, June; sons, Michael Anthony and wife Margie and their children, Michelle and Derek, all of Cedar Rapids, and Robert Anthony and wife Stacy and their children, Abby and Heather, all of Center Point; and sister, Bessie Dugena, Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Bessie (Kratochvil) Anthony, and an infant sister, Anna.

Fred was born June 28, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., and lived most of his life in the Cedar Rapids and Robins area. He married June C. Longberg on May 4, 1952, in Cedar Rapids. Fred was employed as a technician in the calibrations of test equipment at Rockwell Collins for 30 years, retiring in 1992. He was superintendent of Public Works for the City of Robins for 15 years until his retirement in 2008. Fred was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

He was a member and vice president of Lodge Karel IV 13 WFLA, a board member of the Czech National Cemetery and a volunteer teacher at the Cedar Rapids Czech School for Children. Fred was a member of the Waltonian Archers Club in the 1970s and was also very active as a Cub Scout leader and a leader of Boy Scout Troop 69 in Robins. Within the realm of scouting, Fred was a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow; he had received the Wood Badge award and also the prestigious Silver Beaver award.

Fred loved to bake desserts and garden, go mushroom hunting in the fall and make maple syrup in the spring. More than he loved doing any of these things, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.
