Big Ten Media Day: Wisconsin's Bret Bielema
Aug. 2, 2010 10:03 am
Leading off is Wisconsin Coach Bret Bielema, 38-14 in first four seasons.
Bielema starts with a joke. He's late for the podium because he was talking with Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany.
"I have the new expansion guidelines right in front of me," Bielema said with a laugh.
Bielema said 16 seniors have started games. He's very excited about the season. This is his first senior class that have come "full circle."
RB John Clay is 100 percent ready after ankle surgeries.
Bielema understands rivalries after playing at Iowa. One "we'd like to keep rivalry with Minnesota." Like to have to season-ending rivalry game, possibly with Nebraska because Wisconsin doesn't have one.
Bielema follows players' Twitter pages but likes social media. He texts players rather than calls them. He called out players who tweeted about a concert during a day off.
On expectations: "The 2010 season is based on the individuals who are in that room."
On expansion and divisional alignment, Bielema said it's not the top topic among coaches. But "I love the excitement of trying to figure things out. "
He loves the addition of Nebraska to the Big Ten Conference, "To me it opens up more recruiting possibilities to the west."
Bielema said he tried to schedule Nebraska in a home-and-home two years ago. He texted Big Ten Associate Commissioner Mark Rudner to request Nebraska and Wisconsin end the season against one another.
