Boggs, Roy Melvern 'Mel'
Roy Melvern “Mel” Boggs, of Des Moines, passed away Sept. 8, 2009. A private service will be held at a later date.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Aileen Frazier Boggs; son, Steve (Fran) of West Des Moines; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; cherished son-in-law, Doug (Paula) Hemer; and niece, Dianne (Gary) Glanzer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy Botto; and daughter, Donna Hemer. He was born in Des Moines on Aug. 28, 1918, and was a 1936 graduate of East High School. He worked his entire career in the field of mechanical contracting, moving to Iowa City in 1968 to become president and owner of R.M. Boggs Co., Mechanical Contractors. He worked there until his retirement at age 77. He was a B24 pilot in the 8th Air Force during World War II and trained as an air rescue pilot during the Korean War.
