Dr. Satish C. Khera, 74, professor emeritus from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, died Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City under the compassionate care of Hospice.
Satish Chandra Khera was born May 19, 1944, in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, the son of Ram P. and Kanti (Gambhir) Khera. He graduated from University of Lucknow in India with a B.D.S. degree in dentistry in 1968. He then received his M.S and D.D.S. degrees in dentistry at the University of Iowa. Dr. Khera was a tenured professor with the College of Dentistry for over 43 years, retiring in 2017. He was a world-renowned clinician and educator who always believed his greatest professional legacy would be the hundreds of students, residents and faculty he mentored. He remained a very humble gentleman with a generous heart, quick wit and dry sense of humor. He believed in helping any and every one he could! His family, faith, profession, community and friends were the reasons for that constant "Satish smile" that so many knew and cherished!
His family includes his wife of nearly 50 years, Neera; their daughters, Suparna Khera and her husband, Agus, and their daughter, Zion; daughter, Neha Khera-Sloane and her husband, Preston, and their children, Preston and Naomi; Satish's siblings, Kumud Kalra, Nalini Madan, Dinesh Khera and Mrinalini Sehgal; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Traditional Hindu services for Dr. Khera were held Thursday evening at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Services, followed by a time for family and friends to gather, share and celebrate his memory. Donations in his memory can be made to the University of Iowa Foundation to support the College of Dentistry Patient Assistance Fund.
