Roger J. Eggleston, 90, of Iowa City, died Monday, April 21, 2014, at his home. A time for family and friends to remember Roger will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, where military honors will be provided at 6 p.m. Private family burial of his urn will take place at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa, at a later date.

Roger Jones Eggleston was born Nov. 28, 1923, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Leroy and Gertrude (Ward) Eggleston. Immediately following graduation from Waverly High School in 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving until 1945. He took great pride and joy in his Navy service. He returned to the Midwest, where he attended and graduated from Central Missouri State University.
In 1957, Roger married Mildred Harmening in Des Moines, where they resided for five years before making Iowa City their permanent home. Roger was employed as an auditor for Standard Oil for 24 years. Before he officially retired he had worked at the University of Iowa in the Biochemistry Department.
His family includes his wife, Mildred; their three children, Tom Eggleston (Pam) St. Clair Shores, Mich., Ann Eggleston of Houston, Texas, and Amy Cox (Kirk) of Des Moines; and four grandchildren, Ryan and Hailey Eggleston and Ben and Emily Cox.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Max; and his sister, Joyce.
