Harold Amos Cox was born Nov. 30, 1920, in rural Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Roy G. and Florence A. (Stover) Cox. During World War II, Tony served in the United States Army. During his military service he served in the South Pacific and was wounded in the occupation of Okinawa. Returning to Iowa City following service, he married Marian A. Kuhlmann on Sept. 15, 1949. The couple made their home in Iowa City, where they raised their four children and Tony worked as a self-employed plasterer for a number of contractors in the area for many years.
He was a member of the VFW Post 3949, having served as its commander; the Disabled Veterans, also serving as its commander; and the American Legion. He volunteered as a driver for the Department of Veterans Affairs Hospital for several years. One of his proudest moments was being one of the first veterans of this area to be recognized on the Veterans Trail at the Coralville Lake. Tony enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and some hunting. He liked his pets throughout the years, and cherished his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they came along.
His family includes his wife of over 60 years, Marian; children, Kathryn Pieper (Randy) of Donnelson, Randall Cox (Linda) of Marion, Steven Cox of Iowa City, and Cynthia Dohrer (Steve) of Iowa City; grandchildren, Nathane Pieper, Jaime Kemp (Jeff), Cody Pieper, Scott Pieper (Brandi), Amanda Myers (Jeremy), Angela Dohrer and Gwendolyn Dohrer; great-grandchildren, Michelle, Marissa Brendon, and Brianna Kemp, and Faith and Emma Myers; four stepgrandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Yerington (Robert) of Muscatine; and in-laws, Karl Kuhlman, June Cox and Nellie Cox, all of Iowa City.
