Singleton, F. Clayton
F. Clayton Singleton, 96, of Coralville, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, at Windmill Manor in Coralville. A Memorial Service will begin 1 p.m. Friday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, where the family will greet friends from noon until service time. Pastor John McKinstry and the Iowa City Oddfellows Lodge will officiate. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.
The family requests memorials in Clayton's memory to a charity of one's choice.
Clayton was born Jan. 19, 1915, in rural Iowa City, the son of George A. and Annie A. (Fountain) Singelton. Raised in the Iowa City area, Clayton graduated from Iowa City High School in 1932. Clayton married Vera Hileman on Sept. 26, 1936, in Waterloo. Moving to Coralville in 1966, he worked as a security officer and later as a parking meter mechanic for the University of Iowa, retiring in 1985. Clayton also farmed in the Johnson County area for 30 years.
Clayton was a 60-plus-year member of Iowa City Oddfellows Eureka Lodge 44 and Iowa City Carnation Rebekah Lodge 376, of which he was a member for over 57 years.
Clayton is survived by his wife, Vera; sons, Lee Singleton of Cedar Rapids and James Singleton (Samantha) of Monticello, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Cynthia, Laura, Scott, Christine, Lisa, Kelley and James; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Millard; an infant sister, Annie; and a daughter -in-law, Sharon.
