Bernard (Bernie) William Gross, 78, of Cedar Rapids, went to join the Lord on Sunday, June 29, 2014. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, with a rosary being recited at 5 p.m., at Teahen Funeral Home. Services: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: Sacred Heart Cemetery, Templeton.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene (50 years); sister, Delores (Leonard) Sextro of Manning; brother, Donald Gross of Council Bluffs; sister-in-law, Diane Gross of Omaha, Neb.; many nieces and nephews; and his special dog,
Sophie.
He was preceded in death by his son, James; parents; two brothers, Francis and Melvin; and two infant brothers.
Bernard was born March 7, 1936, the son of William and Loretta Gross in Earling. He married Marlene Elizabeth Kalkhoff on July 18, 1964. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, after serving two years. He received his associate of arts degree in electronic engineering at Kirkwood Community College and a bachelor's degree in business with a minor in economics from Mount Mercy College. He was maintenance supervisor at Amana Refrigeration, Quaker Oats and retired from the Federal Court House in Cedar Rapids in 2001. He had been a member of St. Jude Catholic Church since 1969 and had been devoted to his Catholic religion.
Bernie was a very hardworking man. He liked to solve problems and fix things, especially cars. He was an inventor and designer and had a wealth of knowledge. Bernie liked to play cards, socialize with family and friends and watch John Wayne movies. His smile would light up a room.
Bernard was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Layman's Club.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude Catholic Church or the Michael J. Fox Parkinson's Foundation.
