Kapfer, George 'Louie'
UPDATED
George “Louie” Kapfer, 82, of Oxford, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oxford. Burial, with military honors, will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery near Oxford. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the church.
Louie was born April 21, 1928, in West Liberty, Iowa, the son of Louie and Clara (Volk) Kapfer. His family moved to the Oxford area, where he graduated from Oxford High School. He then went on to attend the University of Iowa. He served his country in two wars and in two different branches of the armed services, first the Army during World War II and later in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was united in marriage to Zelda (Sweet) Zeithamel on July 9, 1963, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oxford. For over 35 years he worked for Procter & Gamble in Iowa City, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Oxford American Legion. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing; he was in his glory when he was on a fishing trip with family or friends. The other passion which ranked just under his love for family and friends was the Chicago Cubs, as he would say, “next year, just wait.”
Louie's family includes his daughter, Judi Busche of Oxford; granddaughter, Kelly Vermace of Pennsylvania; siblings, Pete Kapfer of Cedar Rapids, Tommy Kapfer of Illinois, Dick (Carol) Kapfer of Florida, Mary Ellen (Roger) Marks of Cedar Rapids and Judie (Bill) Behrens of Maryland; and his brother-in-law, Robert “Moon” Kahler of Oxford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Zelda; and two sisters, Joyce Brack and Patricia Kahler.
Louie's family would like to thank Heidi, Kelly and the staff at Country View Care Center and the College of Nursing, geriatric nurses for the professional, compassionate and sincere care of Louie these past years. We would also like to thank Sue Randall for the fun, mushrooms and the time she gave Louie. A special thanks to Gary Busche for his support through the years and his assistance in taking care of Louie.
Memorials may be made in Louie's name to the Salvation Army.
