Letter: Voter suppression was successful

Much has been and will be written about the 2016 election.
I just finished reading David Harsanyi's article in The Gazette on Monday. I looked in vain for his mention of the fact that this was the first election in 50 years that did not have provisions of the Voting Rights Act in place. He would, undoubtedly, deny that this was a factor, ignoring the GOP operative in North Carolina bragging how African American turnout in the state was lower than in past years. In states led by Republicans, voter suppression strategies worked successfully to prevent minority communities from being able to access the ballot easily.
I, on the other hand, required only 15 minutes to vote. Across the globe, the U.S. is viewed as no longer a beacon to democracy. That is how you may actually prefer our country to operate. The Trump administration may be successful in making America great again. It probably depends on what you think great is.
