Iowa State's football team is an ESPY nominee

Jun. 27, 2012 2:58 pm
We don't have national-title football or basketball teams at Iowa state universities, but we find our way to the ESPYs.
Two years ago, Northern Iowa's men's basketball team won the ESPY (ESPN's annual awards) for Best Upset. Coach Ben Jacobson and players Ali Farokhmanesh and Adam Koch were on stage in front of the world.
This year, Iowa State's football team is up for the same award, by virtue of its victory over Oklahoma State last November.
The other candidates are the Los Angeles Kings winning the Stanley Cup, Norfolk State beating Missouri in the first-round of the NCAA men's basketball tourney, and 15-seed Lehigh knocking off 2-seed Duke on the same day of the same tourney.
I think it's between the Cyclones and the Kings. ISU's win made the Cyclones a ton of new fans in Alabama, which would have been on the outside of the BCS title game looking in had Oklahoma State gone unbeaten. But the Kings have southern Californians and a lot of other hockey people behind them.
Norfolk State and Lehigh don't have what you would call enormous fan bases.
