Martin, Verne J.
Verne J. Martin, 83, of Grimes, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Baker Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Verne was born on July 8, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, to John and Blanche (Vavra) Martin. He graduated from Wilson High School and then went on to Coe College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business and chemistry. Verne entered the U.S. Army and served in Korea. Following his discharge, he returned to Cedar Rapids and went to work as a research chemist at Penick and Ford Co., retiring from there after over 40 years of service. On Oct. 15, 1954, Verne married Mary Ann Satinsky in Iowa City.
Verne was an artist, gardener, golfer and avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing. He loved animals, especially dogs.
Verne is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ann Martin of Grimes; daughter Becky (Raymond) Coons of Grimes; four grandchildren, Andrew Clark, Kelsey Clark, Joseph Coons and Charity Coons; twin great-grandsons, Anthony and Gauge Clark; and many nieces and nephews.
Verne was preceded in death by his parents, John and Blanche Martin; sister, Laureen (Eldon “Bud”) Fuller; and brother Robert (Florence) Martin.
