Victor
Perah (Weisskopf) Read, 84, of Victor, passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at the United Methodist Church in Victor, with the Rev. Jim Davis officiating. A visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Smith Funeral Home in Victor. Inurnment will be at Immanuel Cemetery in rural Victor.
Memorials may be directed to the Iowa County Food Bank and sent in care of Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 485, Victor, IA 52347.
Perah was born Nov. 8, 1930, in Victor, Iowa, to William and Perah McClenathan Weisskopf. She was raised in Victor and graduated from Victor High School with the class of 1949. Following graduation she remained in Victor and worked on the family farm.
Perah married Marvin Read on Dec. 3, 1949, and to this union three sons were born. She served on several boards, including Iowa County Supervisors for 16 years. She was the first woman to hold this position. She also held various jobs at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Williamsburg following her retirement from the board of supervisors.
Perah loved the outdoors; she enjoyed mowing and had a passion for working in her flower gardens, and she adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She had a gentle and genuine personality and will be missed by everyone who knew her.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Allen (Marilyn) Read of Indianola, David (Julie) Read of Ladora and Gary (Marlene) Read of Victor; brother, Laverne (Nancy) Weisskopf of Victor; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Perah was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, of 60 years; parents; brother, Merlin Weisskopf; and granddaughter, Michelle Perah Read.
