IOWA CITY - Iowa men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery agreed to a one-year extension through 2020.
McCaffery's previous contract expired in 2019. The extension also allows for extra incentives 'continued success” according to a news release.
'I am grateful to Gary Barta and President Sally Mason for their continued support,” McCaffery said in a statememt. 'It is a great honor to represent the University of Iowa and coach the young men in our program. We remain excited about the future of Iowa basketball.”
'Fran's passion, commitment, and abilities, continue to move the Hawkeyes in the right direction,” said Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta. 'I'm excited about this season and beyond.”
Iowa hired McCaffery in 2010 and the sides reached a new deal in 2012 after McCaffery took the Hawkeyes to the NIT. The contract was structured where McCaffery would elevate to a more lucrative track once he took Iowa to the NCAA tournament. With last year's NCAA appearance, McCaffery is scheduled to make $1.8 million this year with $50,000 annual raises through the end of the contract.
The Hawkeyes open the 2014-15 season tonight against Hampton at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
