Kernels sweep DH from Clinton

Clinton, IA – The Kernels swept a doubleheader at Alliant Energy Field on Wednesday night against the Clinton LumberKings. The Kernels used strong pitching and key hitting to win 3-1 and 3-0. The Kernels were out hit by the LumberKings in both games.
In game one, the Kernels got the scoring started with a two run home run in the 2nd inning by Carlos Ramirez off of LumberKing starter Brandon Maurer. With the Kernels leading 2-0 in the 5th inning, Drew Heid's RBI single scored Jesus Campos. The hit made the score 3-0. Daniel Tillman (2-0) got the win by going five innings, allowing no runs on two hits. He struck out five and walked three.
Donn Roach picked up the two inning save. He allowed one run on three hits while striking out three and walking one. Roach has pitched in four games this season. He has three wins and one save. Maurer (1-1) was the losing pitcher. He pitched five innings, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out five and walking four. Clinton finished with five hits. The Kernels had three hits in game one.
In game two, Kernels starter Justin La Tempa and LumberKing starter George Mieses shut down the opposition through four innings. The Kernels scored first in the 5th inning by plating five runs. A single by Travis Witherspoon scored Steven Irvine and Jesus Campos. Then, Jeremy Cruz singled to score Braulio Pardo.
The three runs were more than enough for the Kernels pitchers. La Tempa (1-0) was the winning pitcher. He went five innings, allowing no runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked two. Dakota Robinson pitched the 6th inning, allowing no runs on one hit. Robinson struck out two and walked none. Closer Kevin Johnson pitched the 7th inning, notching his third save. Johnson went one inning, allowing no runs on two hits. He struck out one and walked none.
Once again, the Kernels had fewer hits than the LumberKings in game two. The Kernels had four hits. The LumberKings had seven hits.
The Kernels return to Perfect Game Field on Thursday at 6:35 with Quad Cities and open up a six game, seven day home stand with Quad Cities and Kane County.
