U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, a potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate, will be in the state for three days next month for party fundraisers, as well as an event for GOP congressional hopeful Mariannette Miller-Meeks.
Paul will be in the state Aug. 4-6. A full schedule has not been released yet, but on Aug. 5th, he'll take part in the fundraiser at the University Club in Iowa City for Miller-Meeks. He'll also be in Davenport that day, according to Steve Grubbs, who was recently hired to head the Iowa effort for his political action committee, RANDPAC.
'It is an honor to have Sen. Rand Paul join our campaign for an event during his visit to Iowa,' Miller-Meeks said in a statement Tuesday. 'We both know that the dysfunction in Washington is unsustainable and, as eye doctors, we understand it will take vision to get America back on track.'
Miller-Meeks and Paul are both ophthalmologists. She is challenging U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa, in the 2nd District race.
Paul's visit here will be the latest in a string of stops to the state, which hosts the first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses.
The Kentucky senator has been strengthening his ties to Iowa. In addition to Grubbs, he also has brought on former Republican Party of Iowa Chairman A.J. Spiker.
