University of Iowa students raised more than $3 million in the 24th Dance Marathon, Feb. 2-3, 2018.
During the annual event, students pledge to stay awake and on their feet - no sitting, sleeping or caffeine - for 24 hours to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research. Each participant also pledges to raise at least $500, according to the UI Dance Marathon website, though many raise more than that. Proceeds benefit the Stead Family Children's Hospital, which opened in Iowa City in 2017.
The event features entertainment, DJs, activities and stories from families impacted by pediatric cancer.
This year's fundraising total came to $3,011,015.24.
Dance Marathon also takes place at hundreds of other colleges across the country.
