Schmahl, Grace Lacher
Grace Lacher Schmahl, 91, of Marengo, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, St. John's Lutheran Church, Marengo, with the Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial: Marengo Cemetery, Marengo. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Grace is survived by a son, Edward Lacher (Karol) of Williamsburg; a daughter, Rosetta Hunzelman of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Max Lacher and Clarence Schmahl; a brother, Arnold Andes; and two sisters, Lucille Hamos and Edna Peterson.
Grace Elphina Andes was born Jan. 1, 1918, in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Arnold and Nellie Zeller Andes. She received her education in the Iowa County schools and married Max Lacher on Nov. 17, 1937, in Marengo. To this union two children were born, Edward and Rosetta. Max died in 1972. Grace married Clarence Schmahl on May 1, 1979, in Marengo. He died in 1981. Grace was employed as a cook at the Homestead Inn for many years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Marengo.
