Lindenmayer, Fred D.

Fred D. Lindenmayer, 82, of Marengo, died Monday morning, August 17, 2009 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Private Family Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed in Fred's name to the Iowa Valley High School Auditorium Renovation Project or the Marengo American Legion Post #76. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie; two sons, F. James Linden Mayer and wife Barbara of Ottumwa, and Jay A. Linden Mayer and wife Nancy of Brooklyn; three granddaughters, Julie Ann of Miami, FL, Diane of Long Beach, Long Island, NY and Ariel of Marengo; and a brother Richard of Marengo. Also surviving are a sister-in-law Kay Scott (James) of Phoenix, AZ, brothers-in-law Dan Jacobs (Mona) of Congress, AZ, Jim Jacobs (Doris) of Cedar Rapids and Larry Jacobs of Mechanicsville, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, and sisters-in-law, Bonnie Lindenmayer and Belle Jacobs.

Frederick Dale Lindenmayer was born June 14, 1927 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Ernest L. Lindenmayer and Lila A Smith Lindenmayer. He graduated from Carson High School, Marengo in 1945 and served in the U.S. Army for 2 years, stationed in Korea. Fred married Bonnie A. Jacobs on March 17, 1949 in Marengo. He was employed by Coca-Cola in Iowa City and Marengo for 8 years. He then was employed by Rockwell-Collins Avionics in sales, retiring after 30 years. He was a member of the Marengo American Legion Post #76 where he served on the firing squad. He was a member of the Building Marengo Inc. Fred was a past board member of the Marengo Memorial Hospital. He was active with the Marengo Golf Club and held several offices over the years. He loved to work on his home remodeling with his favorite remark being “It's close enough.” He followed the Iowa Hawkeyes, attending all home games with his traveling buddies.

Fred spent most of his last year at the Marengo Hospital and was amazed and happy with the facilities and the staff. They were “top notch” in his book. He was devoted to his family, loved to follow the grandchildrens' activities and enjoyed life to the fullest.
