Lingo, Esther Hattie Tschopp
Esther Hattie Tschopp Lingo, 97, of Marengo, died Friday, March 22, 2013, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Marengo. Burial will be in Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church in Marengo, Marengo Memorial Hospital, Rose Haven Nursing Home, Care Initiatives Hospice, or the donor's choice.
Esther is survived by two daughters, Doris (Richard) Faas of Cedar Rapids and Marilynn (Robert) Stabenow of Janesville; daughter-in-law, Janet Zimmerman of McKinney, Texas; grandchildren, James (Wendy) Lingo of Mount Dora, Fla., Jeff (Heather) Lingo of Plano, Texas, Dave Faas of Marion, Dawn (Jac) Spring of Winona, Miss., Troy (Rebecca) Stabenow of Jefferson City, Mo., and Zakarij Stabenow of Waterloo; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fritz and Helen Steinmetz Tschopp; her husband, Vestal Lingo in 1989; son, James Lingo in 1992; sister, Wilma Bruestle; and a brother, Fritz Tschopp.
Esther was a lifelong resident of Marengo, graduating from Marengo Carson High School in 1932. On Feb. 5, 1934, she married James Vestal Wayne Lingo at St. John's Parsonage in Marengo. She worked as a cook at the Marengo High School, and later was a secretary at Marengo Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1981.
She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Marengo Legion Auxiliary. She volunteered at the hospital taking cookies and bananas to patients and staff, and donated pies to the Legion and church. Her volunteering continued until she moved to the Lodge on Lafayette in 2003. She moved to Rose Haven Nursing Home in 2007 due to failing health.
