According to the Register Citizen (Litchfield, Ct.), Iowa has picked up one more commitment for the 2011 class.
Torrington High School's Dean Tsopanides intended to play for Milford Academy, the same prep school Iowa running backs Fred Russell and Shonn Greene attended, next fall to try to get his name out there for FBS schools. He never made it to Milford.
Last week, Tsopanides participated at a four-day combine in Milford and he caught the eye of Iowa offensive coordinator Ken O'Keefe, according to the Register Citizen.
“I did really well there,” Tsopanides told the paper. “[O'Keefe] saw me play, asked for my highlight tape and then I got an invitation to go visit the campus."
He visited Iowa City on Tuesday and signed his letter of intent on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder played D-line and offensive tackle for Torrington. Iowa is bringing him in as a defensive end. According to HawkeyeReport.com, Tsopanides will report Aug. 3.
Tsopanides also wrestled for Torrington, winning the Class L state championship in the 215-pound division last winter. In 2010, he finished third in Class L at 285 pounds.
Torrington (Conn.) lineman Dean Tsopanides thought he was headed to prep school, but instead accepted a scholarship to play football at Iowa. (Christopher Massa Republican-American)
