Most areas of Eastern Iowa got just a light dusting of snow from Thursday night's storm, but be prepared -- winter could arrive in full force by the middle of next week, with a strong storm that could bring significant snow accumulation to the area.
Nearly everyone got through Thursday's event with very little snow, KCRG-TV9 meteorologist Kaj O'Mara said today. However, roads did become slick in some spots, causing some accidents. The real accumulating snow fell in a narrow band from Decorah through Prairie Du Chien, where up to 3 inches was measured.
We'll be in a lull now until Sunday night, O'Mara said.
A weak system arriving Sunday night will have enough moisture in it to drop about 1-2 inches across the entire area. It's not a lot, but it's enough to shovel and certainly cause travel issues going into Monday morning, O'Mara said. Winds shouldn't be a big problem, and temperatures during the snowfall will likely remain in the 20s.
Tuesday into Wednesday is a time period with high uncertainty, but indications are there that a strong winter system will move through the area, O'Mara said. While it's too early to talk about snow accumulations yet in Iowa, the potential exists for 4 inches or more of snow, combined with strong winds. This would make travel very difficult on Tuesday and Wednesday, O'Mara said.
Forecast details should become more clarified by Sunday, 48 to 60 hours from the storm's onset, O'Mara added.
