Immigration law has been misrepresented
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jul. 13, 2010 12:38 am
My husband and I are visiting in Cedar Rapids this summer. After reading the July 8 political cartoon regarding Arizona's new immigration law, we are extremely frustrated over the inaccuracy of the message along with the continuing erroneous interpretation the media is reporting.
Law enforcement cannot stop someone just to “see their papers.” One has to be in violation of a law (speeding, running a red light, etc.) and cited before the police can inquire about your legal/illegal status and, even then, only if there is reasonable suspicion about their status, such as the lack of a valid driver's license.
If the public would read this law, it would be apparent it has been grossly, intentionally misrepresented by media.
